Hearst Connecticut Employees Seek To Form A Union

Staffers at the Hearst Connecticut Media Group are seeking to create a union, according to the NewsGuild-CWA.

More than 80% of the 110 people employed in the state unit have signed union cards, and the group is seeking to have the firm voluntarily recognize the union.

Among the issues concerning potential union members are depressed wages, a return-to-office policy and media consolidation, NewsGuild-CWA states.

They are also worried about Hearst’s implementation of “AI tools and trainings,” despite the fact that all content is written and edited by human beings.

“We’re passionate about our livelihoods and the service we provide to our readers,” says digital producer Adrian Szkolar.

Szkolar adds, “We want to have a seat at the table and work with Hearst to be sure that our quality work will continue in the future.”

“I love reporting, but the job is becoming more difficult by the day, and it’s a struggle to live in the community I cover while also helping to raise a family,” comments reporter Ethan Fry. “I’m joining with my colleagues to organize collectively so we can ensure readers throughout Connecticut get the best journalism possible.”
