Harry Hartman was suspended as the publisher of The Gettysburg Times as he faces indictment on federal mail theft charges.
George Sample, chairman of Times owner Sample News Group, announced the suspension after Hartman notified him of the pending charges, the Times reports.
“Harry is a long-term employee of our company who has a great passion for the Gettysburg community and the Gettysburg Times and we will support him and his family as they work through this serious matter,” Sample said.
An interim publisher will be named in the near future, and the paper will continue its usual pursuit of the news, Sample added.
The local U.S. Attorney’s office declined to comment or confirm an investigation as a matter of policy, the Gettysburg Times said. There was no information available on any alleged offense.
Hartman was named as publisher when the Times was acquired by Sample News Group in 2013.
