Gannett is closing the facility in March that prints The Providence Journal, and will move the paper’s printing to New Jersey -- resulting in the loss of 136 jobs, both full- and part-time, the Journal reports.
"The decision to close our printing facility in Providence was prompted by an insurmountable supply chain issue," says a company spokesperson, according to the Journal. "The press utilizes specific plates produced by a single manufacturer, who will be discontinuing their production – rendering our press inoperable."
The plant also prints USA Today and nine other local Gannett newspapers. They will now be printed at a Gannett plant in Auburn, Massachusetts.
The Journal opened the $60 million production plant in 1987. It uses flexography, a technology considered better for the environment.
