Google Gets Newsy With AP: Gemini App Will Now Feature A News Feed

Google is working with Associated Press to supply an up-to-date news feed via its Gemini app. The arrangement is the first of its kind for Google, AP writes.

This was one of two Wednesday announcements about partnerships between publishers and tech firms. In another, OpenAI said it is funding four new Axios newsrooms. (See separate story.)

There still is plenty of bad blood between tech giants and publishers, as seen in multiple lawsuits. But Google and AP say their deal is a positive development.

“For years, we’ve worked with The Associated Press (AP) to provide up-to-date and accurate information for features in Google Search,” Google writes in a post. “To build on that collaboration, the AP will now deliver a feed of real-time information to help further enhance the usefulness of results displayed in the Gemini app.

Arrangements like this may augur well for AP, which lost two big news clients last year: Gannett and McClatchy. The news service has ssecured other sources of revenue, including philanthropic funding, but still faces the conditions experienced by the news industry overall, AP writes.

In 2023, AP signed a licensing deal with OpenAI allowing that firm to use AP’s news archive to train future versions of its AI systems, AP writes.

As for the Google arrangement, “We are pleased Google recognizes the value of AP’s journalism as well as our commitment to nonpartisan reporting, in the development of its generative AI products,” says Kristin Heitmann, chief revenue officer for AP. The goal? To provide "timely, accurate news and information to global audiences," Heitmann states.
