CNHI, Alabama-based publisher of 77 local newspapers, is forcing 46 employees to take a four-week furlough without pay, Poynter reports.
The move, which affects roughly 3% of the staff, comes after a “very soft fourth quarter,” says Bill Ketter, senior vice president for news for CNHI, according to
Poynter. It should have been the strongest tune if the year, given holiday shopping and advertising.
Kettter adds, “Our ethos is to save
newspapers.”
The required furloughs impact news and other departments, and could be extended or reduced, Poynter adds.
CNHI, which is owned by the Retirement Systems of Alabama pension plan, invites candidates to “Make a difference with a career in local journalism.”
