Fast Fraud: Hyper-Disposable Email Domains Are Quickly Spreading

Email security people worried about disposable domains, those that facilitate fraud, have a new threat to ponder: hyper-disposable email domains.

Hyper-disposable domains can evade detection and undermine the effectiveness of traditional fraud block lists, according to email security firm AtData.

As their name suggests, they have brief lifespans — usually less than seven days, compared to several weeks for conventional disposable domains, according to security firm AtData adds.

This makes the domains harder to detect. Hyper-disposable domains thus pose a greater threat because they proliferate so quickly, complicating user verification processes. They now represent 46% of all disposable domains, AtData reports.

"Hyper-disposable domains are increasing the complexity and velocity of attacks, leveraging fleeting lifespans and mass generation to evade detection and undermine traditional defenses," says Diarmuid Thoma, head of fraud and data for AtData.

Thoma adds: "They are particularly insidious because they exploit a growing reliance on automated systems for identity verification and their transient nature leaves a narrow window for detection. Swift and precise action is essential to protect revenue, reduce friction, and maintain confidence in digital interactions."

What can be done about it?

AtData, for one, offers adaptive domain models to identify and block hyper-disposable email domains, the company says. These tools will enable brands to prevent fake account creation, protect their own revenue streams and support the integrity of their customer engagement strategies.
