New Jersey Newsrooms Could Be Hit By Walkout

New Jersey journalists have voted to strike at three Gannett papers unless they reach a contract agreement this week.

Members of the APP-MCJ Guild have voted to walk off the job at Asbury Park Press, Courier-News, and Home News Tribune. The strike threat was approved by 95%, New Jersey Globe reports.

“Our members have had enough,” said Mike Davis, an Asbury Park Press reporter and the acting union chair, according to the Globe. “You can’t have local news without journalists, and we’re done waiting for Gannett to acknowledge our value.”

In addition, the workers allege that Gannett is pursuing artificial intelligence (AI) strategies that affect working conditions.

This has been a tough year for the news business in New Jersey.

The Star-Ledger, a paper that had served Newark, New Jersey since 1796, and competed for scoops with the much larger dailies in New York City, printed its last issue earlier this month; its online edition continues to publish. The Jersey Journal went out of business entirely.
