The Maine Trust for Local News, the nonprofit that acquired most Maine newspapers in 2023, is cutting 49 jobs, including 36 full-time and 13 part-time positions, according to the Bangor Daily News.
The cuts, which affect 13% of the staff, do not include any editorial positions. The Trust says it plans to bolster editorial, Bangor Daily News reports.
In addition to the layoffs, the Trust is reducing its print schedules.
The Lewiston Sun Journal, Kennebec Journal and Morning Sentinel will now print five days instead of six. And The Times Record will print only on Fridays, reducing its printing by one day.
These publications will be delivered by the U.S. Postal Service.
The nonprofit has faced financial challenges and leadership changes, Bangor Daily News reports.
The Maine newspapers were part of Masthead Maine.
The Maine Trust for Local News is a subsidiary of the National Trust for Local News.
