The Washington Post has hired two journalists, Dan Merica and Matthew Choi, as co-anchors of the Early Brief, the Post’s flagship political newsletter, effective April 14. 

They replace Patrick Svitek and Meryl Kornfield, who served temporarily.  

Merica covered Donald Trump’s first term in the White House for CNN, and reported on Hillary Clinton’s campaign in 2016 and the Democratic primary in 2020. Merica has also served  as a national political reporter at The Messenger, covering the 2024 presidential campaign, and as an investigative reporter for the Associated Press.

Choi has served as the only full-time person in the Texas Tribune’s Washington bureau since 2022. Prior to that, he was author of Politico’s Morning Energy newsletter.
