The entire staff of Colorado Springs Independent, an alternative weekly, was laid off last Monday, according to Colorado Public Radio (CPR).
This is happening as the paper and Colorado Springs Business Journal are changing ownership.
The Colorado Media Group announced on Wednesday that it is acquiring both publications. CMG also publishes North Magazine, and the Southern Colorado Business Forum and Digest.
The Independent initially ceased publication in 2023 due to financial shortfalls, CPR reports.
The Independent and the Business Journal were acquired that year by Kevin O’Neil and JW Roth, Colorado Springs businessmen.
Ben Trollinger, editor in chief of the Independent, says that local projects pursued by O’Neil and Roth were impossible for the paper to ignore.
