The anticipated closure of Gannett's Sterling Heights printing plant will result in the loss of 109 jobs, according to local reports.
The plant will print its last issue of the Detroit Free Press on Sunday, August 3 for that Monday. Layoffs will begin on July 1 and continue to August 4.
Gannett announced in January that it is closing the facility. '
Production of 32 newspapers, including the separately owned Detroit News, will be relocated to presses in Michigan, Ohio, Tennessee and Illinois.
“Where our newspaper is printed does not impact our ability to provide continued outstanding service to the community,” Gannett said in January. “As our business becomes increasingly digital, we are making strategic decisions to ensure the future of local journalism. The Detroit Free Press will continue to provide readers with quality, local journalism that matters most to them, and to connect our valued advertising partners with the customers they want to reach.”
