'The Washington Post' Consolidates Print Sections

Washington Post readers will notice a change in Monday's print edition.

The Post is consolidating its Metro, Sports and Style sections, at least on most days.

“The number of stories we publish will not be changing” writes Matt Murray, executive editor, in a note to print subscribers. ”The daily news report, and your favorite stories, columns, and features, all remain part of The Post."

“But we are reordering our sections to improve our efficiency in a way that serves the journalism and bolsters the strength of our print paper,” Murray continues. “The change means the number and order of sections will change."

The announcement comes as the Post’s paid daily circulation is down to 97,000, versus 250,000 five years ago, according to Washington City Paper, which first reported the story.

The Post will publish its new Metro/Sports/Style section on Tuesdays and Saturdays, Washington City Paper adds.

In other Post news, long-time columnist Colbert I. King announced he is stepping down.

King, a Pulitzer Prize winner whose association with the Post started in 1954, when he delivered it, noted he was prevented from accessing his computer by an “unexpected illness that resulted in my hospitalization, along with technical issues with my Post email account.” This period of reflection led him to decide it was time for a change.
