Ukraine and Israel are each at war with nations that seek the destruction of their independent, democratic nations and the annihilation of their people. The parallels to what happened almost 85 years ago are too close to ignore.

It is 1938. The Nazis have rolled through Austria, are attacking Czechoslovakia and, with their Russian allies, will soon jointly invade Poland, putting the country into a crushing vice. A world war then ensued that would rage for seven more years, pull isolationist America into the fray by the end of 1941, and claim more than 70 million lives -- mostly civilians, including the genocidal extermination of more than six million Jews, leaving behind a shattered Europe and Asia. And the war ends only with the dropping of two atomic bombs on Japan.

Iran has foisted terrorism throughout the Middle East and the world for decades, attacking any that espouse religious freedom and unapologetically seeking the destruction of the democratic state of Israel and the annihilation of the Jewish people. And Russia has been a key ally and enabler in these efforts, including providing scientists and know-how to Iran’s quest for nuclear weapons.

Iran, North Korea and China are critical allies in Russia’s attempted conquest of Ukraine, the destruction of its infrastructure and the killing of its civilians, providing tens of thousands of Shahed drones, missile technology, weaponry, intelligence support and thousands of front-line combat troops.

Earlier this week, on the eve of our own Independence Day, the U.S. government announced it was reneging on promised, Congressionally appropriated and desperately needed weapons for Ukraine, most of which were already in Poland and would be in Ukraine’s hands in days. These included Patriot missile ammunition -- all that stands between Russia’s ballistic missiles and the scores of civilian deaths they cause as they rain nightly on Ukraine cities and its people.

Why did this happen? Easy to speculate. Hard to believe the official story line -- that the Department of Defense is suddenly doing a reevaluation of weapons sent to other nations.

Whatever the reason, the consequences are clear: More civilians will die in Ukraine.

To be sure, Ukraine and its people will not surrender. They know the atrocities and genocide that Putin and the Russians have already committed against their people in places like Bucha, Mariupol and Bakhmut. They know that Putin has already kidnapped and is “retraining” many tens of thousands of their children in camps deep in Russia at this moment.

If the U.S. doesn’t reverse-course in Ukraine and provide needed weapons, all of which can now be self-funded through the minerals agreement between the nations, America will lose. Israel will lose, too.

What’s happening in Ukraine and Israel is akin to the run-up battles to World War II. Ukraine will soon become the modern-day Battle of Britain, the pivot point on whether or not Western nations lose to the growing momentum of the axis of Russia, China, Iran and North Korea and its quest to impose autocratic rule on free nations.

It’s a scary proposition, but we can all make a difference, and we can start making that difference today.

Call your Congressional leaders. They care about Ukraine. They voted for the funds for the weapons that are being held back. Let them know how you feel. Tell them to call for the Graham/Blumenthal Sanctions Bill to be put on the floor. This would impose tariffs on countries that do business with Russia.

Make your voice heard. This is a free, democratic nation. We won’t always agree with the actions of our elected officials. When we disagree, we should do so publicly, not silently.

Reach out to friends in Ukraine. Americans fly Ukrainian flags in every city, town and village in America. Let your friends in Ukraine know that. They are under fire every day. They need to know we’re pushing hard for them.
