Writer’s Block: Nothing gets to me like school shootings. Anything like yesterday’s events in Maryland can absolutely own me. Can’t even think straight. Truth told, I’m sitting at my desk late
on a Monday evening and I don’t feel like writing a damn thing. I would like to vent, though on the state of cable news channels at times like this. They provide an invaluable service in disseminating
information. But in this post Sept. 11 world, they are way too quick to slap a “news alert” on something inane, and “breaking news” gets way too much use, too. I doubt I’m alone on this, but I don’t
give a damn on “Countdown: Iraq.” I care less for trading my time to hear celebrity whining or the irrelevant views of political pundits. This is a time in history where anything can happen at any
time. That has been proven. In the past two days there’s a sniper loose around Washington, DC, terrorists probably blew up an oil tanker in the Persian Gulf, the President’s set to hawk war on TV, a
guy who claims to be Bin Laden sent a new missive to the world and now the Washington area sniper gets a kid going to school. I think news channels need to get back to news and help us make sense of
the world. I’d tune in for that.

Dissing GW: The networks, at the time of this writing, we’re not planning to show the President’s speech on Iraq. They claimed the speech lacked news
content, and I think that’s a good call. That’s why you have cable news networks. They’ll show that speech when the big daddy networks carry on with the business of season premieres.
Dissing Mutual Funds: Time, Inc shuttered Mutual Funds magazine today. Even a rate base of 825,000 won’t attract advertisers to this marketplace right now. If Time, Inc. is sniffling……..
