Entire Newsroom Staff Laid Off At 'The Boulder Weekly'

The Boulder (Colorado) Weekly, an alternative publication founded in 1975, laid off its entire staff last Wednesday and missed publishing a weekly issue for the first time in 32 years, according to numerous local media reports.

Shay Castle, editor in chief, was fired prior to the staff layoff.

Jezy Gray, arts and culture editor, reportedly quit when offered Castle’s job.

Nervous staff members had demanded to know the status of their jobs, and soon found they were being dismissed.

“The entire team of Boulder Weekly was fired today, save the special projects manager and bookkeeper,” Castle posted last week. “(I don’t know the fate of of the two ad sales folks who are paid on commission, or the distribution manager and drivers: None were aware this was happening. Fired staff informed them.)

Castle continued, “Apparently, the owner was already in talks last week with someone to sell or salvage what he can. While the Weekly might live on in some form, it will likely be ewithout the team that made the paper what it was these last few years.”

Owner Stewart Sallo told the Denver Gazette that he is not sure when the free paper will be published again.
