New York Daily News, which has long
billed itself as New York’s Hometown Newspaper, is temporarily changing its branding. The flag now says New York’s Election Newspaper.
The change, which will be effective
the next four months, reflects the intense interest in New York City’s upcoming mayoral election.
“The campaign, a turning point moment, has raised questions about the
city’s future amid clashing crises: Affordability, antisemitism, immigration, housing, an epidemic of untreated mental illness,” writes Andrew Julien, executive editor of the
News. “All unfolding against a backdrop of dissent in Washington, deep budget cuts and an aggressive immigration crackdown.”
Julien argues
that The New York Times and Wall Street Journal cut back their Metro sections, and that the New York Post has its own preferred candidates.

“The Daily News is the newspaper best positioned to provide in-depth and unbiased coverage,” he says.
The newspaper will also offer readers
“an interactive pipeline to the politicians, using our reach to bring to light the demands and questions of the people the candidates are seeking to represent,” Julien
continues.
Julien notes that this election is being watched across the nation.
"Can a democratic socialist candidate succeed in the world’s financial
center?” he asks. “Is the Democratic party drifting to the left as the Republican party swings right? Are the fault lines that have long run through American society irreparably
broken?”
