The
Advocate, a provider of LGBTQ+ news and information, has launched a program to identify and develop the next generation of LGBTQ+ journalists.
The program,
called The Future of Queer Media Fellowship, is underwritten by Morrison Media Group. It provides a 16-week, paid fellowship that includes direct experience inside The
Advocate’s newsroom, starting in January 2026 and running through April, with both remote and hybrid participation
The fellowship will address the fact that too few stories about
LGBTQ+ lives are written by queer and trans people.
“We have seen it over and over again in the past several years – mainstream news outlets frequently publish stories about the
LGBTQ+ community, and particularly about trans people, that feature no trans voices,” says Kayla Gagnet, senior vice president of equalpride, operator of The Advocate. “A
critical step in ensuring better coverage of the trans community is recruiting and training more trans journalists.”

Fellows will also receive specialized training from Morrison Media
Group and professional development resources.
“This fellowship is personal,” says Tony Morrison, founder of Morrison Media Group. “ Queer and trans
journalists have long been doing the work — reporting on our communities, sharing truth, shaping culture. They deserve the access, visibility, and support to lead the next chapter of
journalism.”
Morrison adds that “we are not asking for permission to tell our stories.”
