The nonprofit Texas Tribune has named Sarah Adler Hartman as its
next CEO, effective in December.
Hartman will succeed Sonal Shah, who is stepping down at the end of this year.
Hartman is now head of product, subscriber experiences at The New York Times, which she joined in 2020 as its Entrepreneur in Residence and then focused
on the news subscription business.
“Sarah is a next-generation leader with a proven track record of success, and her vision for the
Tribune’s future could not be a better fit,” says Tribune board chair Trei Brundrett. The board is thrilled to welcome her as the next leader of the Texas
Tribune and looks forward to her joining in mid-December.”

Hartman notes that she is returning to her roots.
“As a native Texan, it’s an honor to return to Austin and lead this critically important organization when the work is more urgent than ever,” she says in a
statement. “The Tribune is not only a beacon of transparency and information for Texans, but it serves as a national model for how a nonprofit and nonpartisan newsroom can operate
effectively.”
The outgoing editor Shah approves of the appointment, saying: “Sarah brings a wealth of experience at the highest
levels of both new and legacy media. As a founder and innovator, she knows how to define success in a digital-first news environment.”
The
Tribune was founded in 2009.
