FIEG, the Italian federation of newspaper publishers, has called for an investigation into Google’s AI Overviews, The Guardian reports. It has filed
complaint with Italy’s communications watchdog Agcom.
The group alleges that Google’s AI Summaries are “a traffic killer.”
“Google is becoming a traffic killer,” FIEG says in a statement.
It adds, “This has serious consequences for the economic sustainability and diversity of the media,
with all the risks associated with a lack of transparency and the proliferation of disinformation in democratic debate.”
Complaints are also being pursued in other EU
countries.
Pew Research Center has reported that users are clicking on links under an AI summary once every hundred times, The Guardian continues.
