Fancy A French Toast? IHOP's Lenna Yamamichi On Embracing Playful Indulgence

Stuffed French Toast is back at IHOP, now taking a permanent spot on the menu alongside the brand’s pancakes and other breakfast items. The indulgent dish, which has been a featured limited-time offer periodically throughout the last 20+ years, has been a recurring top customer request on social media.

Now with its permanent return to the menu, the accompanying campaign, “Fancy a French Toast?” positions the breakfast item as a small, inexpensive indulgence in the U.S.’s ever growing “little treat” economy.

Set to KATSEYE’s single “Pinky’s Up,” the fun, colorful hero spot, seen here, shows multiple IHOP customers indulging in the Stuffed French Toast, resplendent in extravagant Rococo fashion. As a server waits on overdressed guests, he too raises a pinky in solidarity with the moment.

QSR Insider talked to IHOP Vice President of Brand Creative Lenna Yamamichi about the campaign.

QSR Insider: How did “Fancy a French Toast?” come about?

Lenna Yamamichi: As part of our development process, we explored nine distinct creative territories that approached Stuffed French Toast from different angles, ranging from product-focused storytelling and comfort-driven nostalgia to value and indulgence. We wanted to understand what resonated with consumers and what felt most ownable to IHOP with the potential to break through culturally.

“Fancy a French Toast?” emerged as the standout territory because it tapped into a real consumer behavior we're seeing today: the desire for small, accessible indulgences that make everyday moments feel special. Stuffed French Toast is already a naturally extravagant menu item, so instead of presenting it like a traditional breakfast offering, we leaned into that sense of indulgence and celebrated it in a much bigger way.

That thinking led us to the idea of embracing extravagance with a wink. The Rococo-inspired visual world gave us an exaggerated, over-the-top expression of luxury that was intentionally playful rather than serious. Pairing that with KATSEYE's “Pinky Up” brought a contemporary energy to the campaign and helped bridge the gap between classic extravagance and modern self-expression.

The result was a creative platform that felt distinctively IHOP: joyful, unexpected, culturally relevant, and perfectly aligned with the Stuffed French Toast experience.

QSR Insider:
Can you talk about “fanciness” and how it fits into the campaign?

Yamamichi:  For us, “fancy” isn't about exclusivity or status. It's about celebrating those small moments when people choose to elevate an ordinary day. We know consumers are continuing to navigate economic pressures, but they're still looking for ways to treat themselves and add a little joy into their routines.

That insight became the foundation of this campaign. Fancy a French Toast?” takes the product's inherent decadence and turns it into a playful celebration.

QSR Insider: What inspired using KATSEYE’s “Pinky’s Up?”

Yamamichi:   The song selection was intentional because it captured the exact spirit of the campaign. The phrase “pinky up” adds a little extra flair, and that’s exactly what we’re doing with Stuffed French Toast.

We love that KATSEYE's track pairs confidence and playfulness with modern cultural energy. Our campaign takes inspiration from traditionally ornate, over-the-top aesthetics, but we didn't want it to feel old-fashioned or precious. The song helped us bring a contemporary edge to the creative, creating this fun collision between Rococo-inspired extravagance and modern pop culture.

QSR Insider: How is IHOP inserting itself in the “little treat” conversation?

Yamamichi:  When talking about “treatonomics,” we're referring to the growing consumer behavior of seeking affordable indulgences. In a world where bigger luxuries may feel out of reach, people are increasingly rewarding themselves with smaller experiences that deliver an emotional lift. For us, it's about creating a moment that feels celebratory, whether you're catching up with friends, treating yourself after a long week, or simply making an ordinary morning feel a little more special. We make those feel-good moments accessible and approachable for everyone.
