Ad Groups Against Marketing Provisions of Tobacco Control Bill

The Association of National Advertisers (ANA), the American Association of Advertising Agencies (AAAA) and the American Advertising Federation (AAF) are opposed to several of the marketing provisions of new tobacco control legislation that was recently introduced in Congress. In letters to the Senate HELP Committee and the House Energy and Commerce Committee, the three associations argue that the legislation would result in a defacto ban on tobacco advertising, in violation of the First Amendment. The Associations' letter concluded: "Don't start down the road to content-based censorship of advertising. The government can take strong, effective steps to restrict tobacco sales and access to minors without trampling on the First Amendment."
