Katrina Effort Talks Students Out Of Their Denims

Cotton Inc. has launched "Cotton. From Blue to Green," a 14-college cause-marketing effort encouraging students to trade in their old denim jeans so they can be converted to insulation used in the reconstruction of schools damaged by Hurricane Katrina. Cotton Inc. is recycling the donated denim into UltraTouch, a natural cotton fiber insulation. To motivate students, retailer Buckle is handing out coupons for $5 off the purchase of a pair of jeans for every piece of denim clothing donated. The goal is to collect 500 pairs of jeans at each of the stops on the tour; so far students have donated 5,671 pairs of jeans.

The effort is part of Cotton's second Dirty Laundry Tour, which teaches students about cotton clothing, its benefits, and care tips. It also offers giveaways and games. Washing Machine Pop-a-Shot, for example, gives students a chance to show off their laundry-washing skills to win a prize and personalized cotton T-shirts with heat press transfers, airbrushed artwork and stencils. Students can find tour locations, laundry tips and games at AccessCotton.com. The sweepstake offers a $1,500 Buckle gift card as grand-prize; 10 second-prize winners get a $100 Buckle gift card and 50 third-prize winners get a $25 Buckle gift card. Future tour stops include the University of California-San Diego, Arizona State University, Florida State University and North Carolina University.
