So, in the spirit of the holiday season, I give to you the 12 days of Techmas--my homage to some of the best uses of technology by the entertainment industry, altruists and media companies that
fulfill the spirit of the season. This week, I'm presenting the first six.
1. Witness.org -- for using the advances in cell phone technology to
empower people all over the world to tell their stories and share their experiences so that they have a voice.
2. One.org -- for the tireless work that the
One Team engages in to bring awareness to the issues of global poverty. Some of the key technology partners are Sun, Macromedia, Microsoft and Tribe. (For a full description of the incredible uses of
technology in this campaign, visit http://www.ted.com/tedprize/2004/bono.cfm).
3. Iqbal Quadir -- co-founder of GrameenPhone, which is a wireless operator providing services to poor rural villages in Bangladesh.
4. Sesame Street Workshop and Noggin.com -- for producing "The Upside Down Show" and allowing children to just be silly, creative
and learn through applications like the Schmancy Schmashup Game.
5. One Laptop Per Child and Nicholas Negroponte for working towards bringing
the power of technology to all children-and envisioning this as an education project, not a laptop project.
6. Intel--for supporting the Computer Clubhouse Network that works to provide creative and safe after-school learning environments for children from under-served communities,
and helping establish over 100 of these clubhouses in regions all over the world.
If you have your own list, why don't you tell me?
