Consumer magazines launched more than 150 new digital initiatives in 2006, according to newly released figures from the Magazine Publishers of America. Among the biggest initiatives were new in-house
production companies created by Hearst, Meredith Corp. and Time Inc. for digital-content, including online video.
MPA members also launched online social networks, user-generated
content creation, blogs, mobile applications, podcasts and video for the Web and mobile devices.
A number of publications were recognized. For example, BusinessWeek was commended for its
exclusive online content and mobile edition for PDAs and cell phones, while Condé Nast launched an online film festival and user-generated content on Web sites. Dennis Publishing developed an
ecommerce section, RSS feeds, mobile-issues and a co-branded AOL radio station.
