Joe Fitz-Morris, Ad Editor and Writer, Dies at 89

Joe Fitz-Morris--the colorful and outspoken founding editor of Adweek predecessor Advertising News of New York and of DM News--died Sunday at age 89 following a long illness.

A self-invented man in the American grain, he was born in 1917 in Westchester. He graduated from high school in 1934 and served in the Pacific theater during World War II.

Perhaps Fitz-Morris' greatest moment as an editor came in 1986 when DM News exposed the fact that DMDNY's directors each received a paid salary of $20,000 a year and other perks. This revelation upset volunteers who worked hard to produce the conference.

Fitz-Morris will be buried in a private service on Wednesday. Condolences can be sent to his wife, Fran Morris, at 16 Kay St., Jericho, NY 11753.
