The E. W. Scripps Company's posted increased ad revenues for Q1, but overall earnings were down slightly over last year. Consolidated revenues for April were $129 million compared to $130 million
during the same period a year ago. Revenues from the company's Scripps Networks operating division were $34.6 million, up 6.6% from April 2001. Broken down by category, Scripps Networks advertising
revenues were $27.9 million, up 2.8%, and affiliate fee revenues were $6.1 million, up 25%.
Based on advance sales for May and June, the company expects Scripps Networks advertising revenues to
increase from 8 to 12% during the second quarter compared to the same period the prior year. The company previously had expected Scripps Networks advertising revenue to be up 3 to 6%. The improved
outlook reflects a strengthening cable television scatter advertising market. Scripps Networks includes Home & Garden Television, the Food Network , the DIY - Do It Yourself Network and Fine Living.
