It's not just Wal-Mart and Tesco. A new survey of leading U.S. retailers reports that two-thirds are actively involved with environmentally friendly practices, and 44% say they have increased their
spending on these projects in the last 24 months.
The BDO Seidman Retail Compass Survey, which polls CFOs, also says that among the top 100 retailers, 83% say they are involved in
green practices, and 62% of those say they have upped their spending.
When asked to identify the greatest motivator, two-thirds of the CFOs cited corporate image (54% mentioned "image among
consumers" and 13% said "image among shareholders"). And 15% of the CFOs named tax incentives as the biggest motivator, followed by 10% who cited city/state or zoning regulations.
