The question I have about the lower third [of the TV screen] is, does a cluttered screen break or alter the engagement between viewer and video content? For example, can a viewer watch for as long a
time when the lower third is used liberally? Does it detract from the perceived value of the program content? (How important could this show be if they're trying to get my attention down there?)
We generally think of multitasking and simultaneous media usage as anathema to engagement; do we therefore want to turn TV viewing in and of itself to a multitasked environment?
