Why MySpace Matters For '08 Election

News Corp. claims that MySpace users are more likely to engage with presidential candidates on the Web than the average online adult, according to an internal study. MySpace users are 139 percent more likely to visit an online chat room with public officials and political candidates than the general online adult population. They are also 50 percent more likely to watch political or public affairs-related video online and 29 percent more likely to look up political or campaign related info on the Web. Moreover, a whopping 86 percent said they were "likely" or "extremely likely" to vote in the 2008 election.

Please note, these findings only come from respondents to IMPACT's survey, a random sampling of 876 MySpace users (MySpace averages 70 million monthly users). Among the respondents, 36 percent of Democrats, 38 percent of Republicans, and 30 percent of Independents said the war in Iraq is the most important issue.

Twenty-nine percent of Democrats and 28 percent of Republicans said the economy was most important. Democrats tended to be more concerned about the environment, while Republicans were more focused on immigration. Interestingly some 27 percent of respondents claimed to be Independent, compared to 8 percent of the general population.
