Media General Endures 1Q Blues

For January, Media General reported revenues of $71.5 million, compared with $78 million in January 2007. Total Publishing Division revenues in January were $41.3 million, compared with $48.5 million in January 2007. For the company's three metro markets combined--Tampa, Richmond, Va., and Winston-Salem, N.C., real-estate classified revenues were down 37%, automotive 35% and employment revenues decreased 34%. Broadcast gross time sales were up 2.2%, driven by political ads, while local sales declines 2.9%. Some good news: local online revenues increased 11.8% over January 2007, reflecting a continued focus on direct sales. National/regional advertising increased 4.5%; advergaming revenues grew 4%.
