House Passes Act Allowing Property Seizure Of Convicted Pirates

  • May 1, 2008
The House Judiciary Committee Wednesday passed the PRO IP (Prioritizing Resources and Organization for Intellectual Property) Act, H.R.4279, which would allow the government to seize property from convicted pirates.

The bill would allow a seizure of property, such as computers, if there is a "substantial connection" between the property and the copyright infringement. The bill no longer includes a provision that would have increased financial penalties to $30,000 for each track on an album, up from $30,000 per album.
