Summer Doldrums Hit Broadcast TV

In the repeat-reality world of the networks' summer schedules, nine repeats and NBC's Saturday night at the races comprised the 10 most popular programs on primetime last week.

Six CBS and four NBC shows reached the top 10 in total households for the week ended Sunday, according to Nielsen Media Research. The highest-ranked show on Fox was 15th-place rerun of the 1996 sci-fi movie Independence Day. ABC followed with a special edition of Primetime in 16th place. Some summer unscripted shows placed in the top 25, including NBC's For Love and Money (11th), NBC's Crime and Punishment (12th), Meet My Folks (tied for 18th) and Last Comic Standing (tied for 22nd). Fox's American Juniors tied for 22nd for its Tuesday edition.

CBS (5.1/10, 5.45 million) led the way in total households, two-tenths of a rating point ahead of NBC (4.9/10, 5.27 million). Fox (3.5/7, 3.75 million), ABC (3.4/7, 3.62 million), UPN (2/4, 2.13 million), The WB (1.4/3, 1.51 million) and Pax (0.5/1, 580,000) trailed. In adults 18-49, NBC (2.8/10, 3.54 million) came out on top, ahead of Fox (2.3/8, 2.96 million), CBS (1.9/7, 2.45 million), ABC (1.7/6, 2.23 million), UPN (1.2/4, 1.57 million), The WB (0.8/3, 1.03 million) and Pax (0.2/1, 250,000).

  2. Law & Order (NBC), 8/15, 8.58 million.

  3. Everybody Loves Raymond (CBS), 7.8/13, 8.34 million.

  4. 60 Minutes (CBS), 7.6/15, 7.87 million.

  5. CSI (CBS), 7.4/15, 7.84 million.

  6. King of Queens (CBS), 7.4/12, 7.48 million.

  7. Law & Order-Wednesday (NBC), 6.5/12, 6.88 million.

  8. Law & Order: Criminal Intent (NBC), 6.5/11, 6.89 million.

  9. Without a Trace (CBS), 6.4/13, 6.85 million.

  10. Daytona 400 (NBC), 6/13, 6.34 million.
