Even as newspaper financial results fall off a cliff, readership is staying fairly stable, according to new data from the Readership Institute. Overall U.S. newspaper readership, including
young readers, declined only slightly since 2006, with readers generally loyal, "engaging" the paper five times a week.
Institute director Mary Nesbitt says the results are
surprising, since "the imminent demise of newspapers seems to be all we ever hear about. Readers aren't deserting local newspapers at anything approaching the rate that advertisers are,"
Newspaper readers spend an average of 27 minutes with the daily paper and 57 minutes with the Sunday paper. Readers are also more engaged with the print newspaper than the newspaper Web site, says
Institute findings.
