The New York Times Company announced that advertising revenues for the company's Newspaper Group decreased 9.7% in March 2002 compared with results for the same month last year. As anticipated, the
decline in March was slightly greater (0.8%) than February's decline of 8.9% due to a switch of the Easter holiday from April last year into March this year. The Easter holiday period is traditionally
a time of reduced advertising at both The New York Times and The Boston Globe, the Company's two largest properties. Adjusted for the effect of Easter, the decline in March's advertising revenue would
have been approximately two percentage points better than February's decline. In the first quarter of 2002, advertising revenue for the Newspaper Group decreased 11.2% compared with the same period
last year.
