Cox To Sell 29 Newspapers

Cox Newspapers Inc. has decided to sell the Austin American-Statesman and 28 other newspaper properties, reports the Texas newspaper, including 10 Texas community weeklies, to pay down debt. Sandy Schwartz, president of Cox Newspapers, believes he will have a series of bidders around the middle of November. Hearst Corp., which owns the Houston Chronicle and the San Antonio Express-News, is on the short list of prospective buyers. The Austin American-Statesman is considered one of the better-performing papers for its size.
