Total magazine advertising for the month of August closed at $1,104,214,111, a 11.3% increase over last year, according to Publishers Information Bureau (PIB).
Advertising pages for August were
18,107, up 7.0% from last year. Year-to-date, advertising revenue and ad pages continued their steady rise, with a 16.4% increase to $10,668,227,169 and a 13.8% increase to 175,557 pages,
respectively.
According to PIB, 9 of the 13 major advertising categories showed positive dollar growth, most notably in Technology (68.9%); Media & Advertising (41.1%); Drugs & Remedies (17.4%);
Home Furnishings & Supplies; Retail; and Apparel and Accessories. Losses were noted for Automotive; Direct Response Companies; and Financial, Insurance & Real Estate.
For the year-to-date
comparison, gains were noted for Retail; Technology; Media & Advertising; Financial, Insurance & Real Estate; and Food & Food Products, which led 11 out of 13 category increases. Losses were noted for
Direct Response Companies and Automotive.
"Magazine advertising continued to be strong in August," said Richard Zimmer, Vice President/Research at Magazine Publishers of America. "Growth in
categories such as Technology; Media & Advertising and Retail is a reflection of the power of magazines in the media mix."
