The Fight for Young Eyeballs

The battle for dominance in the kids' cable television market was underscored by announcements from Time Warner's Cartoon Network and Viacom's Nickelodeon.

Cartoon Network said it "finished July as the highest-rated ad-supported cable network with kids 2-11 in prime time, posting a 4.7 rating, and the second-highest-rated network with households in prime time, posting a 2.0."

"Moreover," the network said, it "won prime time in household ratings on 12 nights in July - more than any other basic cable network."

Nickelodeon, on the other hand, said that during July it "outdistanced the nearest cable competitors, Cartoon Network and TBS Superstation.

On a 24-hour average, Nickelodeon outperformed Cartoon Network by 29% in rating and 57% in household delivery, and TBS by 48% in rating and 44% in delivery."
