Ad Revenue and Pages Continue to Grow

Total magazine advertising for the month of July closed at $1,179,584,896, a 17% increase over last year, according to Publishers Information Bureau (PIB).

Advertising pages for July were 19,213, up 15.3% from last year. Year-to-date, advertising revenue and ad pages continued their steady rise, with a 17% increase to $9,563,709,734, and a 14.5% increase to 155,445 pages, respectively. Ten of the 13 major advertising categories showed positive dollar growth in July 2000 vs. July 1999, most notably in Technology (70.7%), Media & Advertising (53.1%), Drugs & Remedies (31.5%), Food & Food Products (25.1%), Retail (47.7%), and Financial, Insurance & Real Estate (19.1%).

Losses were noted for Automotive (-15.3%) and Direct Response Companies (-14.1%). For the year-to-date comparison – January to July 2000 vs. 1999 - gains were noted for Technology (39.8%), Media & Advertising (50.6%), Financial, Insurance & Real Estate (27.9%), Food & Food Products (25.3%), and Drugs & Remedies (17.1%).

Losses were noted for Direct Response Companies (-13.5%) and Automotive (-7.5%).
