The San Diego Union-Tribune ended up the only newspaper from the West to take home two first place awards at the 2001 National Headliner Awards, a nationwide competition recognizing excellence in
print, and broadcast, media. Editorial cartoonist, Steve Kelley, was honored for a collection of 12 cartoons, and staff photographer, Peggy Peattie, won for her photo taken during the burial service
for Lakiba Nicole Palmer.
