Spending On Holiday Experiences Will Grow Faster Than On Gifts, Study Says

Most Americans are going into the holiday season with expectations of spending more than they did last year. On average, they expect to increase their spending by 8% from the prior year, according to an annual survey by consulting firm Deloitte.

Notably, consumers expect their spending on experiences will be even stronger with a 16% gain from a year earlier.

“As respondents contemplate where to spend their holiday dollars, they are prioritizing experiences like holiday events and socializing with loved ones,” according to Deloitte. “While gifts spending is expected to be relatively flat, and nongift purchases such as party apparel and decorations continue to gain in importance.”
