'Modern Family' Soars With Time Shifting

Early season time shifting of broadcast network TV shows for viewers gives CBS and ABC shows high marks.

The biggest gains for premiere week go to ABC's "Modern Family" which gained 38.7% -- 2.4 ratings points more audience among key 18-49 viewers from its live same day rating -- to a 8.6 live plus seven day playback rating. For another episode that week, "Modern Family" grew incrementally -- a 2.3 rating in adults 18-49 rating (a 38.3% hike) -- to a 8.3.  "Grey's Anatomy" came in fourth place, growing 1.7 ratings to a 5.8, a 41.5% hike.

CBS' big-rated "Two a Half Men" was next -- gaining 1.8 rating points, 20.4% -- to a 12.5 rating among 18-49ers. "Men" was easily the best-rated show of the broadcast premiere week. CBS had four of its best telecasts of the week when it came to time shifting after seven days.

In addition to "Men," CBS had two episodes of "Big Bang Theory, which added 1.4 rating points each to a 6.5 overall rating and a 6.3 overall rating for an additional episode, a 21.5% and a 28.6% gain respectively. "CSI" pulled in 1.3 more ratings -- a 41% gain -- to a 4.5 overall rating.

Fox had two shows in the top 10. Its best came from new show "New Girl" piling on 1.5 ratings, 31.3% more,  to a 6.3 overall rating. "Glee" added in 1.3 ratings, an 32.5% addition, to a 5.3 rating.

NBC's "The Office" was its big time-shifting show -- and its only top 10 result -- improving 1.4 rating, or 35%, to a 5.4 overall rating.

Overall, CBS gained 17%, an additional 2.1 million viewers in primetime, to 14.2 million, and among 18-49 viewers, 23% higher, a 0.7 additional rating point to a 5.0 rating, which it says is more than any other network. ABC climbed 15.2%, or 1.5 million viewers, to 11.4 million viewers and among 18-49 viewers, up 21%, 0.6 of a rating point to a 3.4 rating.

In terms of overall percentage gains, CW shows did well -- as they have done in the past. "Supernatural" grew 63% to a 1.3 adults 18-49 rating; "America's Next Top Model", swelled 57% to a 1.1 rating; Fox's "Fringe" tacked on 53% to a 2.3 number; CW's "Nikita" went up 50% to 0.9; and NBC's new "Up All Night", added on 46% to a 3.5 rating.
