Honda Social Effort Encourages Focus On Driving

Honda is launching a social campaign encouraging safer driving habits with videos that show that if you can’t do basic things such as vacuuming or cooking while texting, you certainly can’t text and drive.

The effort, with the hashtag #PhoneDownEyesUp, is in support of Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

The #PhoneDownEyesUp campaign was developed to target all drivers as a reminder about the dangers of texting while behind the wheel, says Ernie Kelsey, senior manager, social, experiential and regional marketing for Honda.

“We also wanted the campaign to be highly visible with Millennials who tend to be more engaged with their smartphones, and to share an easy-to-digest message about the difficulty and danger in trying to do two things at once,” Kelsey tells Marketing Daily. “The campaign also targets driving-safety advocates, those learning to drive, parents of teenagers, and really, anyone who gets behind the wheel.”

The six 20-second videos  share a similar concept, using relatable experiences to show people the difficulty of trying to text while participating in typical everyday activities such as cutting hair, gardening, making pancakes, pet sitting, vacuuming and working out.

The videos, created by RPA, will be shared and promoted on multiple social media channels including Instagram, Facebook and YouTube: www.honda.us/PhoneDownEyesUp. The campaign will also be promoted with paid media to have an even greater reach, Kelsey says.

In addition, Honda is creating downloadable lock screens to help drivers remind themselves to put the phone down in the car. Fans can save the images from the posts on Honda's Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr pages directly to their phones and set them as their lock screens via their phone's settings.
