Big-City Newspapers Face More Cuts

The Boston Globe newsroom employees have until week's end to take buyout offers that would help the newspaper eliminate as many as 50 positions, or 12% of newsroom staff. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reducing its news staff by 30%, or about 90 employees. Staffers with five or more years with the company will be offered voluntary buyouts, with layoffs to follow if necessary. The circ area will also lose 100 jobs. Finally, Washington Post Co. CEO Donald Graham says he expects substantial declines in the publisher's newspaper and magazine businesses this year, after an "embarrassing" 2008, reports .
