Kara Swisher delves deeper into the ongoing talks between Google and Twitter, and finds out that the search giant will be competing with Microsoft to strike a commercial search or product partnership
deal with the microblogging sensation. Swisher says the Twitter talks for both parties are centered around a deal to exclusively deliver search or other similar services to Twitter properties.
Twitter, with its real-time database of 140-character-or-less "tweets," is shaping up to be the next great battlefield in search. Google obviously dominates the field, with
Microsoft a distant third, but some think the market for real-time search could prove to be a great equalizer for Microsoft. Swisher notes that past efforts at third party search arrangements have had
mixed success for both Google and Microsoft.
Meanwhile, Twitter management has made it clear that the company, thanks to a hefty dose of VC funding, is more interested in growth and
distribution than revenue. Twitter co-founder Biz Stone recently said as much in
a blog post. This makes it unclear under what terms
Twitter will pursue a deal with either Microsoft or Google. As one source tells Swisher: "As impressive as what Twitter has done, we are all overexcited ... and so it's hard to figure out the
right thing to do with all the pressure to do
something."
