The iPhone Backlash

Apple's rejection of Google's Voice application from its App Store has made some of the technorati, including TechCrunch's Michael Arrington, so angry that they've vowed to ditch the iPhone altogether. The editors at Fast Company were so moved by the decision, that they decided to publish seven reasons why iPhone users should make AT&T and Apple "suffer for their sins.

Reason one: as evidenced by the FCC inquiry, AT&T and Apple have become anticompetitive. Reason two: "Heavy lies the crown, just ask Microsoft." The exploding popularity of the iPhone means that Apple and AT&T are becoming more vulnerable to security breaches. Reason three: "They're dicks." In pulling Google Voice from the App Store, Apple also pulled all related GV apps, some of which users paid for. Pissed off users wanting refunds were told to that that responsibility lies with the developer (Google).

Reason four: "Apps are mayhem." Indeed, what happens when you have 11 screens of apps? "Apple's organizational system for apps on the phone is terrible; move one, and the rest tumble into disarray, and there aren't any ways to organize them by name, size or kind." Reason five: iTunes on the iPhone is also a mess: "it's almost impossible to discover cool new apps easily without having to sift through garbage first." Reason six: some of the Android phones out there look and play better than the iPhone; they are also much more customizable. Reason seven: T-Mobile is a LOT cheaper, Verizon has a better network and customer service, and Sprint is faster, than AT&T.

AT&T and Apple definitely have their issues but unfortunately if Sprint or Verizon had been the first carrier with the iPhone the situation would be no better. Although it often doesn't get much credit, AT&T in my opinion is the most flexible of the top three US carriers.
