FCC Wants More Spectrum

Toward its ambitious goal to make affordable broadband access to all Americans by 2020, the FCC's National Broadband Plan wants to reallocate more than one-third of the broadcast TV spectrum -- 120 MHz of 300 MHz -- for wireless broadband access within the next five years, reports TV NewsCheck. The agency is asking for "voluntary" channel sharing among stations; it wants to free up 36 MHz from the broadcast spectrum. The recovered spectrum would be auctioned to wireless broadband operations and share some proceeds with broadcasters.
