Mag Bag: 'WaPo' To Launch 'Capital Business'

WaPo To Launch Capital Business

The nation's capital is getting its own weekly business magazine courtesy of The Washington Post, which recently announced the upcoming launch of a magazine titled Capital Business, set to debut April 19.

Headed by editor Dan Beyers, the new business title will offer a mix of enterprise reporting, analysis and commentary, industry trend-watching, and profiles of local entrepreneurs and businesses, with coverage of government contracting, tech, finance, real estate and legal issues. Beyers said: "Capital Business is intended to help the business community navigate the region's dynamic economy at a time of great change and opportunity."

Noting the "extraordinary emergence" of the capital-area business scene, Steve Hills, The Washington Post's president and general manager, promised: "Every issue should produce a potential lead to a business opportunity or tell our business audience something they didn't know."

After a three-week free introductory period for all seven-day newspaper subscribers, Capital Business will switch to a subscription model, with a year's worth of issues (52) priced at $49, each delivered to subscribers with Monday's home edition of WaPo.

The DC newspaper beefed up its business content to compete more closely with national newspapers, like The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. In October 2009, The Washington Post and Bloomberg News unveiled plans to launch a new news service as part of a deal that will also give Bloomberg access to Post content for distribution on its financial news network. The Washington Post News Service with Bloomberg News, which debuted in January, posts about 120 stories per day.

Conde Nast's W has a new editor, Stefano Tonchi, who will replace veteran editor Patrick McCarthy when the latter leaves the company by the end of this year. He comes to the top editorial spot at W as the fashion title migrates back to Conde Nast's consumer magazine division, leaving its previous home in the Fairchild Fashion Group.
