Scoble: Facebook Is Scary

Blogger Robert Scoble -- who knows a thing or two about ambitious tech giants -- is trying to wrap his head around Facebook's grand strategy, and, well, he's freakin' out a bit. "Facebook wants to own your digital fingerprints," according to Scoble. Regarding the social network's new sharing tools, he predicts: "I'd expect to see Facebook's new social features to show up on at least 30% of the web's most popular sites within a month."

As a result, "Facebook gets to study everything we touch now and will bring a much more complete stream back to the mother ship." So, "Is this all a deal with the devil," Scoble and other bloggers ask. "Absolutely!" Scoble, admittedly, is still mindful of the fact that Facebook "erased" him from the Web for about 24 hours a few years ago. "Let's say Facebook wanted to kick you off the system, it could, and that could have deep implications for your business, career, etc." Furthermore, Scoble adds: "My fears are that Facebook might turn evil and use its position against organizations, the way that Apple locks out organizations from shipping apps (do you have Google Voice app on your iPhone yet? I don't)."
