Worldwide PC's and Internet Use

The Second Quarter 2001 Global Internet Trends Report from Nielsen//NetRatings reports that a total of 459 million people around the world have home-based Internet access.

- Worldwide at-home Internet population increased by 30 million people from the first quarter to the second quarter of 2001.
- The United States and Canada account for 40% of the world's online population, down from 41% in the first quarter of 2001.
- Europe/Middle East/Africa remained at 27% in the second quarter.
- Asia-Pacific has 22% penetration.
- Latin America is static at 4 percent.

A June 2001 survey by Dataquest reported that:


- 65 million U.S. households are actively using the Internet, up from 8.4 million users in November 2000.
- 61% of U.S. households are actively online.
- 25% of online households have high-speed Internet access
- Cable modem subscribers comprised more than 50% of all online high-speed households.
- Nearly 20% of dial-up households said they expect to subscribe to some form of high-speed connectivity by mid-2002.
