Tea Party Merchandise Flies Off Shelves; Obama Takes A Negative Turn

  • USA Today, Tuesday, November 2, 2010 11:01 AM
Bruce Horovitz reports that tens of millions of dollars' worth of Tea Party merchandise -- from bumper stickers to thongs -- have flown out the door of free-market capitalists since the conservative/libertarian/populist political movement took root in 2009.

No one knows exactly how much has been made but Amy Maniatis, vp of marketing at CafePress.com, says, "We've never seen such a hot-button merchandizing trend during a midterm election."

Obama-supporting merchandise is headed the other way at the site where people customize their own designs and messages. Although 95% of Obama-themed products had "positive" images and messages in January 2009, Maniatis says nearly 50% of the Obama-related merchandise that customers create now is negative.
